CHRISANTHI KARAKOSTAS
Passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children and grandchildren, in her 73rd year, on Sunday, March 22, 2015 in Monrovia, MD. Beloved wife of the late John F. Karakostas; mother of Eleni Bokas and her husband John, Frank Karakostas, Tina Lundstedt and her husband Jack, and Chris Karakostas; proud grandmother to Katerina, Chrisanthi, Nikki, Tony, Brittany, Kristina, Chrysanthi, Lexi and Jack; and proud great-grandmother of Ava and Arianna Jackson, and Aidan and Melina Linberg. Chrisanthi was born in Dorio, Greece and immigrated to the United States taking up residence in Chicago, IL. After meeting and marrying her husband John, they established a home in Maryland where Chrisanthi spent the duration of her life dedicated to the fulfillment of her family. JOHN BLAKE MURPHY “Sean” “JB”

Of Kensington, MD, on March 19, 2015. A second-generation native Washingtonian, JB was born to Richard A. Murphy, originally from Baltimore, and Honoria Louise (Clark) Murphy of Washington, DC on February 10, 1922. He was their youngest son after older siblings, Mary L., Richard A., and James M., all of whom predeceased him. JB attended Gonzaga High School and Catholic University. He was a public service architect, serving as the first county architect for Montgomery County for eight years and subsequently for 20 years as supervising architect for the Smithsonian Institution. In retirement, he was the first resident architect for the National Building Museum during its restoration and operation. His loving wife, Dorothy Anne, and beloved son, Blake Patrick, preceded him in death. He is survived by daughter, Kerry Ann of Rockville, MD; dear devoted companion and caregiver, Helen Ann Carter of Kensington, MD; daughter of the heart, Stephanie Smilay of Takoma Park, MD; and hordes of nieces and nephews of unknown location. Requiem service and ceremonial inurnment will be private for immediate family. Memorial contributions may be made to your favorite bartender.

Sarah Frances Poston Zynda

Sarah Frances Poston Zynda was born in 1921 in Shelby, North Carolina. She received her Registered Nurse’s Certificate and served in the US Army Nurse Corps in England from 1943-1945. She then moved to Washington, DC and continued her nursing career for several years. She married Alfred Zynda in 1951 and became a lifelong resident of Silver Spring. She is survived by two daughters–Helen and husband Roger Ward, and Louise and husband Alan Grove, as well as five grandchildren–Michelle, Philip, and Valerie Grove, and Rachel and Rebecca Ward. Mary Theresa “Terry” Garcia, nee Diederick

1/7/1925 – 3/20/2015

A native Washingtonian, Mary Theresa “Terry” Garcia was the daughter of George P. and Alice E. Diederick, and a descendent of many prominent early settlers of Maryland. She spent her childhood in Bethesda, Burnt Mills, and Gambrills (Davidsonville). In 1936, her family moved back to Washington, D.C. where Terry attended McKinley Technical High School, graduating in 1942. She joined the Office of Scientific Research and Development in 1943 and worked on the Manhattan Project. In 1947, Terry met Frank Victor Garcia of El Paso, Texas, a WWII veteran and Cartographer with the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, and in 1948 they were the first couple to be married at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Washington, D.C. In 1952, Terry and Frank settled in Takoma Park, Maryland, where they welcomed four children and were active members of the community. Terry volunteered at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, was a Girl Scout leader, supported her husband in his service as a Takoma Park City Councilman, was active in the Takoma Park Women’s Club, and participated in OASIS activities. After her husband’s death in 2009, Terry moved to Asbury Methodist Village to be near her son, and enjoyed many new friends and activities. A loving wife, sister, and mother, Terry was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Frank; and her brother George P. Diederick, Jr. She is survived by her sister Catherine A. Vann of Reedville VA; her children Marty Foltyn (late husband Jim Wirt) of San Diego CA, Julie Hull (Bill) of Tulsa OK, Laura Garcia (Rodney Wilson) of Walker WV, and David (Alicia) of Gaithersburg MD; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank her caregivers at Asbury.
